The King's Triumph, A Lesson Learned

Sonnet
My Queen, my love, my wife, you met the test
Your chess-playing skill had made me take a rest;
For though I thought myself a mighty king,
I found our game of chess could make me sing.
Though I won out in battle from the board,
Your gentle smile was a greater reward;

A lesson learned to see beyond the win,
That life's more than a game we just play in.
Let us not strive to be the only king,
But learn that life is more than anything;
More than a match of war and strategy,

More than a game of strength and victory.
Next time we meet on such a chessboard field,
Let us both be content with how we yield;
For there is more to life than who should reign—
The truest victory comes from peace we gain.
