Abandoned in the Rain

Sonnet
Abandoned in the rain, a black kitten mews,
In fright, his fur drenched o'er with heavy dews;
At night he's left at busy street's own gates,
By one who knows not of the black cat fates.
Forsooth, they say a black cat brings ill luck;
The superstitious fear his form and pluck;

So when young man did spy a black kitten there,
He chose to leave him in the nighttime air.
Alas, he left him 'neath the stars so bright,
And ne'er looked back to see his piteous plight;
Left out in rain with no one to protect,

The little cat was doomed to suffer neglect.
Yet still the kitten hoped for rescue yet,
And searched for shelter in his moment of distress;
But all he found was cold and desolate night,
Without respite from danger or fright.
