Chapter 1. The night air was thick and heavy, cloying with the smell of smoke. It hung like a veil in the darkness, obscuring all else. Fires had been burning for days now and the air was filled with the acrid taste of ash. He walked slowly, cautiously through the smog, his eyes darting back and forth as he searched for signs of danger.
He could hear distant screams and cries in the night, but he stayed focused on his task. He had to find a way out of this mess before it was too late. He rounded a corner and suddenly heard voices coming from a nearby alleyway. He quickly ducked into the shadows to hide himself from view, but not before recognizing one of the people talking: it was his old nemesis, John Blackwood.
Fear coursed through his veins as he watched them from afar, their conversation becoming clearer as they drew closer. John spoke with an easy confidence that sent shivers up his spine: “We’ve got this place surrounded; no one will be able to get out alive unless they can find a way past us first.” His companion nodded in agreement and they both laughed heartily at their own cleverness before continuing on their way. He knew that he had to act fast if he wanted to escape this place alive, but what could he do? Then it hit him – smoke and mirrors!

As he looked back at the city engulfed in smoke and flames behind him, tears welled up in his eyes – but these were tears of joy rather than sorrow; after all, he had just managed to outsmart one of the most feared criminals in town!
